Nehru Zoological Park is located at a distance of 16 km from Hyderabad city and was opened to the public in 1963. It is located near the important 200-year-old Mir Alam Reserve and is the first multi-arched masonry dam the world. The Nehru Zoo is one of the largest zoos in India and one of the best sights to visit in Hyderabad. Managed by the Forest Department, the Telangana government, the zoo was named after Jawaharlal Nehru, who is India’s first prime minister.

Nehru Zoological Park was created in 1959 when it was open to the public on October 6, 1963. There have been many changes and additions since the conceptualization of the zoological park. For example, in 1974, Lion Safari Park was launched and the Nocturnal Animal House was established in 1982.
Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad was established to conserve and raise endangered species, particularly the wildlife of the Deccan Plateau and to rehabilitate them.
Other objectives of the establishment of the Hyderabad Zoo were to educate the public about wildlife and to raise awareness and facilitate research on animal behavior, rehabilitation and reproduction.

The Nehru Hyderabad Zoological Park boasts a wide variety of wildlife. There are more than 140 variety species of birds, animals and mammals in the zoo.
